The Wall Street Journal on meaning by building.
Martin Heidegger conjectured that the building of a house and the idea of dwelling on the earth are essentially related. The German word for building, "bauen," and the English word "being" have the same root; to build, it would appear, is to be.

  1. I guess I should be grateful that the WSJ even bothers to mention MH. I wonder if anyone other than enowning noticed.

One can find a zillion words related to the Proto-Indo-European bhu-series root.

But "dwelling" is more specific than "to be" and less specific than "building." One can dwell in a forest glade or not dwell in a mansion. It all depends on...letting be?
