Many of the leading lights of postwar European thought, including some of the fiercest critics of religion, first discovered phenomenology through the mediation of Catholic philosophers.Jean-Paul Sartre's reading of Heidegger, for instance, was greatly informed by the work of the neo-scholastic philosopher Alphonse de Waelhens, who wrote the first book on Heidegger's philosophy in French.
