We can push it aside, and most of us do most of the time. We instead get caught up in the affairs of the world, whether it’s celebrity gossip, or sports, or even politics taken in a certain way—we get caught up in what They think and how They value us. We allow ourselves to be determined by those others. And Heidegger thinks a real confrontation with death can snap one out of all of that.
