The Old Revolution on Heidegger in Miyazaki's animations:
Miyazaki's portrayal of technology as magic, at least for me, resonates with Heidegger's emphasis of technology as that which reveals a poetic truth.
He doesn't explore that specific aspect of Miyazaki further in his post on the politics behind his animations. But I thought I'd mention it anyway as I'm taking the critters to see it today.

Dear enowning, Just found out you linked my post on Miyazaki! Thanks!

As for exploring the issue of technology in Miyazaki at more depth, that would be very fascinating, but I'd have to read up on Heidegger much more. Perhaps you can clue me in on what would be good to read.

Let us know what you think of the Miyazaki film.

Also, I'm happy that I've disovered your blog! Thanks.

The best source for Heidegger on technology is his "Question Concerning Technology". It's not easy to dive into without help though. I know I've read 3rd party explanations in books that helped me, but sadly I can't remember them right now. However, there should be help online. You could start here:

I enjoyed Howl's Moving Castle. It's up there with his best, although Spirited Away and Totoro are still my top picks. I do wish he'd expand his palette a bit, and apply his talents to stories that don't involve the same young girl. This one recycled some of the familiar themes and things he's used since as far back as Nausicaa. Still, I may be grousing about too much of a good thing. No other animator's work comes close to what Miyazaki has done.
