In Hubert Dreyfus's Later Heidegger lecture of 10/21/2001, on "The Thing", he says, around minute 55, that the joining of the fourfold crosses out being. He says that a diagram in another essay shows that, but I haven't found that diagram yet.

Just curious - what does "crosses out being" mean? Is that like the four-fold establishing a pre-ontological understanding of being (something like when Dreyfus talk about styles), and thus Dasein's understanding of being recedes into the background, remaining unarticulated and inexplicit?

Good luck on finding the reference btw - hopefully someone else will know!

To "cross out being" has a special meaning in Heidegger, because in "On the Question of Being" (1955) he actually crosses out the word being in the text. I've always been curious as to how the printers handled that.

As far as what it means, particularly in this context, it depends on whether being refers to an entity, the being of beings (e.g. as in Aristotle, et seq), or Beyng. I hope that on finding Heidegger's diagram, the accompanying test will explain it. However, that's not always the case. There's a early diagram of a fourfold in the Contributions (minus sky, plus world) that I hope to post soon, but the surrounding text doesn't refer to the diagram directly. Malpas's Topology books has long, informed, discussion of the evolution of the fourfold.
