Bryan Magee asks William Barrett about Heidegger and modern existentialism.

From BBC's Men of Ideas, 9 February, 1978. I remember getting permission from my housemaster to watch this at 9 PM, the time the TV was supposed to be turned off on week nights. I had been reading Sartre's novels and knew nothing about Heidegger.

It's interesting that back then, the unpublished Contributions was believed to be the second part of Being and Time.

Comments:
I found the discussion to be quite worth the time. Barrett's representation in 30 (?) minutes is as clear and fair a description as I have heard in such confined quarters. That his interlocutor was sympathetic also helped.

Yes, it's quite commendable of Magee to have been open to Barrett's presentation, and not adopted the usual oxbridge attitude towards MH.

And that's what makes it worth reviving this morsel of video. As far as I knew, there were only some ancient VHS tapes of the show in some university libraries, so it's great to have a good quality print show up on YouTube. A contribution to our culture, commendable, and all that
