The world represents the “openness of the broad paths of the simple and essential decisions in the destiny of any historical people.” This in simpler terms is the day to day existence, the rules and morals of this existence and so on. The world is grounded, just as the illuminated clearing is surrounded by darkness, on the earth. So in opposition to the world and illumination is the earth which “is the spontaneous forthcoming of that which is continually self-secluding…and concealing.” The earth represents that from which all things emerge, the darkness surrounding the clearing, and works in an almost oppositional symbiosis with the world.
