Although it might surprise some, one of the most important intellectual friendships of the 20th century was between Chillida and German philosopher Martin Heidegger, each of whom was an investigator into what might be called the mass of space. When they met in the 1960s, each realized that the other was thinking about space through mass in different mediums — words and iron.
