In Philosophy Now, Bob James on Faulkner and technology.
In ‘The Bear’ Faulkner describes the big woods in terms of which Heidegger might approve: ‘ancient’, ‘timeless’, ‘musing’, ‘eternal’, ‘markless’, ‘impervious’, ‘somber’, ‘immemorial’, and ‘impenetrable.’ And in the final part of ‘The Bear’ we can also readily imagine Heidegger’s voice being used to narrate Ike’s response to the destruction and reordering wrought on the woods by the lumber company in only two short years.
